The King's Honours List: A Controversial Omission?
The sports world is abuzz with questions surrounding the recent New Year Honours list, specifically the absence of renowned golfer Rory McIlroy. This Northern Irish sports icon, who achieved a career grand slam and led Team Europe to Ryder Cup glory, has sparked a debate.
A Call for Recognition
After McIlroy's dramatic Masters win in April, there was a strong push for him to be knighted. Mike Nesbitt, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, voiced his support, stating, "This beloved figure deserves the nation's highest praise, and a knighthood is fitting."
However, McIlroy's name was notably missing from the honours list released on Monday evening. Despite reports that he had been nominated by Stormont for recognition, the Executive Office directed all queries to the Cabinet Office, which does not comment on individual honours.
A Look at McIlroy's Achievements
The 36-year-old from Holywood, County Down, has already been awarded an MBE in 2012 after winning his first major championship. This year, he became the first European to win all four major tournaments, an incredible feat that solidified his golfing grand slam. McIlroy's stellar year included wins at the Irish Open, the Players Championship, and his seventh Race to Dubai title.
He was also voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2025 and won the equivalent award from RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster. In November, when asked about the possibility of being knighted, McIlroy expressed his humility, acknowledging that it was up to "people more powerful and important" than him.

Since the honours list's release, there has been no comment from McIlroy or his team. The media is expected to raise this issue with him in the new year, potentially at his next tournament, the Dubai Invitational, starting on January 15.
