Why a 21-Year-Old Winger Chose Wolves Over Arsenal and Man City: A Story of Pragmatism and Ambition
A highly-rated young winger, Josh Esen, made a surprising decision when he turned down interest from Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City. Instead, he chose to continue his development at Wolverhampton Wanderers, a choice driven by pragmatism and a desire to prove himself. But here's where it gets interesting: Esen's decision wasn't just about location or the size of the club's youth academy. It was about finding the right environment to showcase his talent and achieve his ambitions.
Esen, now 21, joined Wolves in 2021 after a successful spell at Llanelli Town's academy. Despite interest from several Premier League clubs, he chose Wolves over the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City. When asked why, Esen explained that it was the closest club to him in terms of location, but that wasn't the only factor. "As an academy, they constantly take care of players and give them opportunities. This is very important," he said. "Other clubs have very large pools of young players. They mostly prefer the loan method. I wanted a place where I could stay and show myself."
The winger's decision to stay at Wolves paid off. He quickly progressed through the ranks, playing for the under-18s and then the under-21s. His performances caught the eye of international scouts, and he was invited to join the Wales Under-21s and even attended a senior training camp in Portugal. However, Esen ultimately declined these opportunities, as his ambition lies elsewhere.
"Gökhan Gönül invited me when he was in charge of the [Turkish] U21 National Team," Esen revealed. "However, I couldn’t participate because of a problem with my Turkish citizenship, which we are still trying to resolve. But my dream is to wear the Turkish A National Team jersey and I am working towards that."
So, what does this story tell us? It's a tale of pragmatism and ambition. Esen chose Wolves over more prestigious clubs because he believed it was the best environment for him to develop and prove himself. And while he may have turned down international opportunities for now, his ultimate goal is clear: to represent Turkey at the highest level. But here's where it gets controversial: some may argue that Esen could have achieved more by joining a bigger club like Arsenal or Manchester City. What do you think?
