Among the critics are US Senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, who recently visited Denmark to address concerns in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. They expressed deep disapproval of Trump's new tariffs, which were threatened against several European countries, including Denmark, Germany, France, and the UK, unless the US is granted the right to purchase Greenland.
Murkowski described the tariffs as 'unnecessary, punitive, and a profound mistake', especially after Nato allies deployed troops to Greenland in response to Trump's threats. She emphasized that these actions would push European allies away and fail to enhance US national security. Murkowski further highlighted the real-time consequences, noting that Nato allies are being forced to divert attention and resources to Greenland, a move that benefits Russian leader Vladimir Putin by threatening the stability of the strongest democratic coalition.
Tillis echoed similar sentiments, stating that the response to allies' troop deployment was detrimental to America, American businesses, and Nato allies. He added that coercive action to seize an ally's territory was 'beyond stupid' and would harm Trump's legacy.
Mike Pence, the former US Vice-President, also expressed concerns, suggesting that the current situation could fracture the strong relationship with Denmark and other Nato allies. Pence emphasized Denmark's strong alliance with the US, but the situation remains tense.
Republican US House member Michael McCaul shared similar worries, cautioning that a US military intervention in Greenland would be disastrous for Nato. He argued that the president's military access to Greenland is sufficient for protection, and any military invasion would turn Nato upside down, potentially leading to a war with the alliance.
