Pharmacists in Surrey are sounding the alarm over the growing issue of medicine waste, which is not only costing the NHS a significant amount of money but also has environmental implications. Every year, the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board (ICB) issues 16 million prescriptions, spending approximately £176 million. However, around 1.2 million units of these medicines are returned unused, amounting to a £12 million cost. This situation is not just a financial burden but also an environmental crisis. When these unused medicines are returned to pharmacies, staff must dispose of them safely, often ending up in landfills or waterways, where they can harm wildlife. This process is both time-consuming and costly, as highlighted by Akash Patel, who runs the Trio Pharmacy in Shepperton. He notes that the increasing volume of returned medicines is straining pharmacy resources, and he suggests that people might be more cautious about their prescriptions if they were charged for returning unused medicines. The scale of the waste is so significant that some pharmacies now require weekly collections to manage the medicines waste bin. On one occasion, the returned items included high-value medicines such as inhalers and insulin pens, with an estimated cost exceeding £5,000.
