2025: A Year of Throwbacks… and the Return of a Childhood Disease.
That's right, while the world was busy revisiting the '90s with bootcut jeans and wired headphones, something far less nostalgic made a comeback: measles. For the first time in over two decades, Mesa County, Colorado, found itself grappling with this highly contagious disease. But here's where it gets concerning: this wasn't just a local issue.
The resurgence of measles in Mesa County was part of a larger, nationwide trend. In 2025, the U.S. witnessed over 1,900 measles cases, shattering a 30+-year record for annual infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 47 outbreaks across the country. Sadly, this led to more than 200 hospitalizations and, tragically, three deaths – two unvaccinated children in Texas and an unvaccinated adult in New Mexico. To put this in perspective, consider the numbers from the preceding years: 285 confirmed cases in 2024 (across 16 outbreaks) and a mere 59 cases in 2023. Remember, measles was even declared eliminated in the U.S. back in 2000.
So, how did this happen? The measles made a swift entrance in January, with initial cases in Texas's South Plains quickly escalating to over 100 by February and spreading into New Mexico. By April, the disease had reached parts of Colorado, including Pueblo and Denver. However, Mesa County saw the highest concentration of cases within the state.
Interestingly, Mesa County had a close call in early June when a Colorado Springs resident, already infected, passed through the area. But the real outbreak began on August 15th, when a Grand Valley resident tested positive. Mesa County Public Health Epidemiologist Supervisor Kathleen Satterfield confirmed that this single case quickly snowballed, leading to six additional infections in the following weeks.
Adding to the challenge, the local public schools had just started the academic year, creating a heightened sense of urgency. Fortunately, the Mesa County Public Health Department, along with its statewide partners, managed to contain the outbreak by September 24th – approximately 37 days after the initial case was announced. In total, 11 measles infections were confirmed in the county, with no hospitalizations or fatalities.
And this is the part most people miss: According to Satterfield, the success in containing the outbreak was largely due to strong partnerships and a swift emergency response. The department worked closely with medical providers and the school district, collaborating to contain the spread as quickly as possible. A dedicated team of 27 employees from various sectors of the department worked tirelessly, tracing exposures to over 300 locals, monitoring more than 50 exposed individuals, and answering nearly 100 daily inquiries through a temporary measles hotline.
Looking ahead, Satterfield emphasized the critical role of vaccination in preventing future outbreaks. The MMR vaccine is highly effective and safe. Mesa County is prepared to respond to any additional cases that may arise, remaining vigilant in its monitoring efforts.
