London is on the brink of a cultural transformation, as plans have officially been approved for what will become the city’s largest theatre. The Greenwich Council has granted Troubadour Theatres permission to construct an impressive 3,000-seat venue, which will be located on the eastern side of the Greenwich Peninsula in south-east London.
This new theatre will feature two auditoriums, each with a capacity of 1,500 seats, allowing it to surpass the current record holder, the London Coliseum, which accommodates 2,359 attendees in the West End. Construction is anticipated to commence in June, marking a significant milestone in London's theatrical landscape.
Troubadour Theatres, known for its venues in Wembley Park and Canary Wharf, expressed enthusiasm about how this new project will enrich the city's cultural offerings and promise exceptional experiences for audiences in the years to come. Co-founders Oliver Royds and Tristan Baker stated, "Receiving planning approval for the new Troubadour Greenwich Peninsula Theatre is not just a pivotal moment for us; it opens an exciting chapter in our dedication to ambitious, large-scale live performances."
The duo recently launched their Canary Wharf location, which is currently showcasing the first theatrical adaptation of the popular book and film series, The Hunger Games. Meanwhile, the iconic Starlight Express by Andrew Lloyd Webber is being performed at their Wembley venue.
While the planning permission is granted for a temporary duration of ten years, it’s important to note that the site is earmarked for future development into residential tower blocks, following the Greenwich Peninsula Masterplan. This decision was made during a council planning board meeting held last week.
Community feedback has been generally positive, with Sylvia Williams representing the Greenwich Millennium Village Residents’ Association voicing her support for the theatre, describing it as a "welcome addition" to the local cultural scene. She also urged the council to ensure that local schools have access to the theatre's facilities.
Rowley Gregg, the Chief Operating Officer of Troubadour, highlighted the theatre's commitment to community engagement, noting that the Troubadour Trust allocates 50 pence from every ticket sold to fund community initiatives, including workshops and ticket programs for schools and charities.
Once construction kicks off in June, the new theatre is expected to take approximately nine months to complete. It’s worth mentioning that while this new Troubadour venue will focus exclusively on theatre seating, the Barbican Centre, which has a similar total capacity of 3,299 across various spaces, spreads that capacity over multiple performance types. For example, the Barbican Hall can seat 1,943, while the Barbican Theatre accommodates 1,156, and The Pit provides an additional 200 seats. Additionally, the Barbican includes three cinemas, featuring one screen with 280 seats and two smaller screens with 153 seats each.
On the other hand, the Royal National Theatre boasts three main auditoriums with a combined seating capacity ranging from approximately 2,400 to 2,500.
