The Miami Dolphins' Head Coaching Search: Is Jeff Hafley the Answer?
The Dolphins' quest for a new head coach is underway, and the latest interview might just have revealed their best option yet. But is Jeff Hafley truly the right fit?
With other potential candidates like Vance Joseph still in the mix, and the buzz around John Harbaugh still circulating, Hafley could be the top choice if the Dolphins' initial plans fall through. In fact, he might even be their preferred pick from the start.
A Perfect Match?
The Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator seems to align perfectly with the vision of the new General Manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan. This connection could be a key factor in the Dolphins' decision-making process.
The LaFleur Factor
Landing Matt LaFleur seems unlikely at this point. The Packers want to keep their head coach despite some contract issues. LaFleur's contract extends through the 2026 season, but there are reports of uncertainty about offering him a significant new contract. If the Packers decide to move on, the Dolphins could be waiting in the wings. If LaFleur doesn't become available, Miami might turn to one of its own coaches.
Hafley is well-regarded and respected in Green Bay, making him a strong contender. This move would benefit Sullivan, who would gain a coach he is familiar with, streamlining his transition to the Dolphins and fostering a more consistent philosophical approach.
Experience and Potential
The pool of candidates with prior head coaching experience isn't particularly deep this year. The Dolphins have already interviewed Kevin Stefanski, and there are other experienced coaches like Harbaugh, Joseph, and Mike McCarthy. However, Stephen Ross has never hired a coach with previous HC experience, making it unlikely this time around.
Hafley has the backing of his defensive players. According to reports, his players are hoping he stays put, but they also recognize the opportunity he has. Matt LaFleur believes Hafley will excel in interviews and secure a head coaching position.
Hafley's Impressive Resume
Hafley boasts a solid coaching background. He began coaching at the college level in 2001, with stints at WPI, Albany, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers. After working in the NFL with the Buccaneers, Browns, and 49ers, he returned to college as the Ohio State Buckeyes' Co-Defensive coordinator. Hafley then became the head coach at Boston College from 2020 to 2023 before joining the Packers as their HC in 2024.
Under Hafley's guidance, the Packers ranked third in turnovers in 2024. They showed improvement throughout the 2025 season, finishing in the upper half of the league. While Hafley lacks NFL head coaching experience, those who have worked with him believe he is ready to lead his own team.
A Smooth Transition
With Sullivan in place, Hafley's transition with the Dolphins, if he gets the job, would be smoother. The question is whether he can build a solid coaching staff. Hafley has three more interviews to go, and he has already interviewed with the Titans.
