A shocking incident unfolded at Toronto Pearson International Airport when a ground crew member found himself trapped in the cargo hold of an Air Canada Rouge aircraft last month. This alarming situation emerged during the taxiing of Flight AC1502, which was en route to Moncton, New Brunswick. As the plane approached the runway, some passengers were startled to hear a person’s screams emanating from beneath the aircraft, prompting a swift return to the departure gates.
The event occurred on December 13 aboard an Airbus 321A, designed to accommodate up to 184 passengers. While getting ready for takeoff, several individuals seated towards the rear of the plane reported hearing faint cries for help. Gabrielle Caron, one of the passengers, recounted her experience to CBC, stating, "Some of the people who were sitting towards the back of the plane heard the person screaming and banging, trying to get their attention. We noticed the Flight Attendants hurriedly moving about the cabin, and it was evident that something unusual was occurring as we observed the crew gathering around the aircraft."
In response to the situation, Air Canada explained that the cargo doors had been "inadvertently closed" while the ground crew member was still inside. Fortunately, the worker was successfully freed from the cargo hold without sustaining any injuries. However, the flight faced significant delays as the pilot exceeded their maximum working hours, preventing them from continuing with the flight. Originally scheduled for a 2 PM departure, confusion from the airline’s communication led to the eventual cancellation of the flight, with passengers only being informed around 1:15 AM the following day.
The report indicated that the aircraft finally departed at 8 PM on the second day after the incident. A passenger later shared a video capturing the moment when the pilot addressed the situation with the passengers, expressing, "I've never encountered this before. I hope it's the first and last time." The pilot further explained in the video that they had already begun the taxi process when they heard the baggage crew member calling for assistance from under the plane.
